Editorial Policy

How we decide what gets listed, how we keep it accurate, and how we respond when we get it wrong.

How listings are added

The vast majority of MyBHLocator MN listings are imported automatically from public authoritative records — primarily the federal NPI registry, augmented with Minnesota state license boards. See Data Sources.

A provider qualifies for a listing if they meet all of the following:

  • Has a valid NPI or active Minnesota license in a behavioral-health profession.
  • Practice address is in Minnesota.
  • Is not deceased and the license is not currently revoked or surrendered.

Providers who don’t appear automatically can request a listing through /contact with their NPI and practice address.

How listings are verified

On import we cross-check each provider against the NPPES NPI registry. When a match is found, the listing displays the NPI Verified badge. For providers without an NPI (rare in behavioral health), we verify against the relevant state board records.

Verification is identity-only. It confirms the provider is registered to practice. It is not a quality endorsement, an indicator of insurance participation, or a guarantee of current availability. See Methodology.

How corrections are handled

Anyone — provider, patient, family member, colleague — can submit a correction via /contact. We treat corrections in this order:

  1. Safety-critical corrections (deceased provider, license revocation, dangerous misinformation) — same day, every day.
  2. Provider self-claim corrections (verified by email or phone match against NPI/state record) — within 1 business day.
  3. General corrections (typos, hours, services offered) — within 1 business day.

Removal requests

We honor removal requests in the following situations, processed within 1 business day of receipt:

  • Provider has retired or no longer practices.
  • Provider is deceased (request from estate or family).
  • License has been revoked or surrendered.
  • Listing was created in error or is a duplicate.
  • Provider opts out for safety reasons (domestic violence, stalking, etc.).

We may decline removal of factually accurate, public information about a currently practicing licensed provider unless an opt-out reason applies. To request removal, write to /contact from an address we can verify.

Conflict of interest and paid placement

  • No paid placement. We do not accept payment to add, rank, feature, or remove provider listings. Search results are ordered by relevance, proximity, and verified data only.
  • No advertising on provider pages that competes with the listed provider.
  • Affiliations disclosed. If we ever introduce a sponsored section (we currently have none), it will be clearly labeled and segregated from organic listings.

Reviews and ratings

We do not currently display user-submitted reviews or aggregate ratings. We will not invent, simulate, or placeholder rating data. If we add reviews in the future they will follow Google’s structured-data guidelines and be tied to verified patient experiences.

Crisis safety

Every provider page on MyBHLocator MN displays the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Crisis content is never gated behind paywalls, registration, or interstitial ads. We will not run any feature, design pattern, or partnership that delays a person in crisis from reaching help.

Accuracy disclaimer

We use authoritative public records, but data ages and providers move, change practice, or retire. Always confirm availability, insurance acceptance, and current services directly with the provider before scheduling. If you find something wrong, please tell us.
